Why choose IT-BHU over new IITs?

Another year, another IIT-JEE, another batch of IITians. The results for the combined Joint Entrance Exam of the Indian Institutes of Technology for the year 2011 will be out on the 25th of May. Successful candidates are provided with their AIR (All India Rank) which will be used to get them their desired branch and/or institute. This is done using a process called ‘counselling’ which in this context is far from how simple it sounds!

Candidates higher up the merit list (AIR1-2000) have the luxury to choose their desired course at a desired IIT. IIT Bombay or IIT Kanpur or IIT Delhi? As you can see, life is not too bad. However for rank holders below AIR 2000 getting selected in IITJEE brings in a month full of feelings of anxiety and depression. The joy of cracking the supposedly toughest examination at its level is nowhere to be seen as these students and their parents are lost in the one big question:

COLLEGE or BRANCH?

Do I take up a ‘better’ IIT and any non-core branch? Do I join IT-BHU with a core branch? Do I join the new IITs? Even after a month full of discussion with all sorts of people ranging from the newspaperwala to corporate heads, the answers are unclear as ever and the student remains clueless as to how to fill up that counselling sheet.

Now coming to the aim of my article. Anyone with an AIR below 2000 who is confused between joining IT-BHU or new IITs should know better after reading below. I’ve tried my best to remove all doubts and apprehensions regarding IT-BHU.

Newly IITJEE qualified students do not like the sound of IT-BHU because according to them it is not an IIT and while preparing for JEE we all dreamt of being IITians one day. Well, being IITJEE qualified makes you no less than people who study in IITs (some with a worse rank) and you have every right to call yourself an IITian. However, let me assure you that IT-BHU is certain to be converted into an IIT in the next two months.

Check this: http://www.prsindia.org/uploads/media/Institute%20of%20Technology%20Bill%202010.pdf

and this: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-03-24/india/29182519_1_iit-status-institutions-of-national-importance-new-institutes

These are official pages where it is clear that the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT(BHU), Varanasi is one of the aims of the IT act amendment bill which was passed by Lok Sabha on 23rd March, 2011 and is certain to be passed by Rajya Sabha in the first week of July, 2011.

So don’t worry, the problem of being an IITian is solved. Infact we already write Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi in our CVs etc.

The campus of IT-BHU is incomparable to new IITs which do not even have a campus of their own and are running on temporary buildings borrowed from other institutions. The campus of BHU is legendary. The main campus is spread over 1300 acres which is bigger than any IIT except IIT Kharagpur. The sports facilities are amazing as there is 1 cricket field, 2 soccer fields, and 1 hockey field apart from swimming pool, tennis, badminton, volleyball, squash, and basketball courts. There’s a separate complex devoted to athletics too. Now these totally belong to IT-BHU however there are several more sports and recreation facilities that belong to BHU and you can easily use them. In the new IITs you will have to rub shoulder with students of the institute which owns the campus and it has been heard that IIT students are ragged by these students which is shameful and surely something you don’t want to face.

The University has “within the same campus” three pioneering Institutes, viz. the Institute of Technology, the Institute of Medical Sciences and the Institute of Agricultural Sciences and fifteen Faculties. Only in IT-BHU you will have the opportunity to interact with students (girls) of IMS (medical) and other faculties like law arts which are in the campus itself-you won’t get this in any other IIT.

IT Hostels are old just like those of Kanpur, Kharagpur so if you want a new beautiful hostel you should go and join private colleges like SRM, Manipal etc. Here each hostel has a common room equipped with two TT tables, A TV with tatasky connection. Each hostel has volleyball and badminton courts inside the hostel itself and you can use them round the clock. Apart from that there are LAN and internet facilities and you will just have to buy some wires to set them up. Internet usage has no download limit; though sites like orkut, facebook are 'officially' banned students access them through proxy servers. Yes, the rooms are small for two people but go to IIT Delhi hostels and you will find the same size rooms. IITs are not about the size of the rooms but about the quality of people who live in those rooms! The hostel life here and the hostel mates is something you will never forget and always cherish in your life.

The academic pressure at IT-BHU is far less compared to IITs. In IITs the professors are arrogant and really strict disciplinarians and you have to mug for hours if you want a decent grade. Here in IT-BHU professors are lenient and the academic load is easy. So in the end you will get a good grade to show to the companies offering you jobs with a little effort only. Moreover, if you are serious about CAT/GRE preparations then you would have plenty of time to prepare for them while being in IT-BHU.

The reduced academic load allows participation in Institute Gymkhana activities, mainly managed by the students, which encourage artistic and creative talents in dramatics, elocution, music and visual arts. Gymkhana has various active clubs, viz. HAM, Audio, Photography, Automobile and Aero-modelling, Cine, Computer, Astronomy, etc. Students actively take part in managing three national level events every year, viz. All India Cultural Festival “KASHI-YATRA”, All India Sports Competition “SPARDHA”, and All India Exhibition of Engineering and Technology Models “TECHNEX”.

Again placements of IT-BHU are incomparable to new IITs. Placements are mainly dependant on the alumni which your college has. If some ex-student from your college is at a high post in Microsoft then there is a good chance that Microsoft will come to campus for recruitment. Since new IITs have NO alumni’s there placements won’t be as good as IT-BHU. IT-BHU is a really old college and there are plenty of its students currently at high posts in companies. The average package at IT-BHU for electrical and electronics is around 7 lacs per annum while for computer science it is 9-10 lacs per annum. And it is obvious that everyone gets placed. Same goes for internships.

All in all the new IITs will never be able to provide you with the experience that IT-BHU will. And you will soon call it IIT-BHU.

While criticising one IIT or another, the stark reality that people somehow tend to forget is that they did not do exceptionally well in IITJEE. So you have yourself to blame that you are not studying Computer Science at IIT Bombay or IIT Kanpur. The smart thing to do at this moment would be to accept this fact and realise that IT-BHU is the best option this rank of yours. I hope I have made my case clear.

  1. When you were talking about rooms in hostel then you forgot to mention that 2nd year onwards you dont have to share it and every one gets one room for himself.

  2. As i said iitians ought to be above such trivial matters. For the record though you get single seater only in fourth year. It is mentioned second year in the counselling brochure because a few years back when seats were lesser, single accomodation was possible in second year.

  6. Hi Chetan,

Nice article! But I would suggest you to refrain from giving deadlines such as "However, let me assure you that IT-BHU is certain to be converted into an IIT in the next two months."
We never know yet! I am sure it will happen, but information on such issues should be given carefully.

    Good luck.

I'm realising that i've done a big mistake for opting 2nd allotment introduced this year....
I got civil in BHU (my 84th choice)
and i thought its better to be in IIT Hyderabad raher than in bhu..now i'm realising my mistake after reading this article...
I'm praying to god not to change my institute....Lets hope 4 the best...

  15. dude, some new iits has better opening-closing rank than IT-BHU ex.iit ropar ,hyderabad etc.Regarding infrastructure they will have their campus in 1.5 yrs and you will be pass out in 4 years .Doubt about their faculty then go to iit ropar site you will find that. And also they have mentor who are above IT-bhu in any aspect.Last but not least companies will not recruit you in name of your institute you have to work hard for that.

  18. With Due Respect Mr. Anonymous, I would like to state that CSE has two groups Btech and the Mtech Dual, the avg you mention here takes into account the batch as a whole. If you take the CSE Dual Degree, it has a avg package around 9 which is pretty much decent to what the writer here has mentioned. Apart from that the MNC (Mathematics and Computing) dual degree is another branch that's striking gold with an avg near 8 lpa.

I think you are someone from the new IITs. Well, its good to have high regard for your institute, but these IITs are yet to prove their mettle. Will have to wait some time more, before we can analyse that. And regarding IT-BHU, it has long stood the tests of time and does not need an explanation for trivial accusations like ones from you. Seems you are too much lacking in confidence to even reveal your name, choosing instead to post Anonymous.

  19. sir
i don't think anyone compares it bhu with new iit's
most of the students are confused(including me) between lower branch in old iits and good branch in it bhu

but after reading this i will choose it bhu!!

    one more thing
i dont think most of us get rank between
2000-3000 because we didn't study but it could be that that day was an off day for some of us!!

  20. I am a student of B.Tech here.
I everyday regret my decision of opting this institute.Nothing seems nice here.
Please visit the hostels of this institute here and see the condition of toilets and common room.
They look like some passenger railway boggy.
There are two main grounds here out of which one looks like a plot and no facility is available at gymkhana.
The third ground which they boast of look like some drought affected area.
Cafeteria looks like a lab and lab looks like a cafeteria.
You will hardly find any book required in libray here. However it seems nice place for budding lovers.
    Teachers!!!
They are simply great. The only thing they know is to dicover new ways to trouble students and most of them are worse than primary teachers.
    Placements!!!
The computer science branch placements they boast of.No one is placed in foreign , a thing for which iits are known for.
The director of this institute has scam charged
    visit this link http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100119/jsp/nation/story_12000865.jsp
Even after conversion no immediate change is likely to occur at least in faculty.

  21. IT BHU
    It is heaven for girls.
They simply get awesome grades here with little or no effort thanks to the extra kind teachers here.
Plus they need not spend any money here.Folks of boys sorrounding them have to do that.Afterall what they have to do here.Finding nothing to do here only depresses you or indulge in meaningless activities like hanging over even worst gals.

  32. I will answer you all one by one.
@anonymous1: "I everyday regret my decision of opting this institute.Nothing seems nice here...budding lovers...no sports facilities blah blah blah"

Well reading your depressing post I can easily make out that you are having a hard time at the institute adjusting to the fact that all your life you have been good at nothing apart from academics. You have no passions otherwise you'd be involved with your heart and soul into the countless activities goin on: sports, lit, technical etc etc. Being involved myself I can safely say that the enthu of the fucchas is what drives us to perform better each time. You complain about the ground conditions and facilities in gymkhana. Again I'm sure that you are not talented in any sport, hence have no hope of making the team. All grounds are occupied evening onwards with the college team and aspiring players practising their sport so people like you dont get any facilities :p dude leave the grounds, i guess they arent for you.
Reg those frustrated about girls and the treatment they get: Well in case you havent noticed, girls get preferential treatment everywhere, right from school, get used to it. Boys/ Men like girls. As simple as that. I bet all of you are ugly and boring. No girl even looks are you. I can proudly say from experience that ITBHU girls are sporty and no barrier exists between girls and boys. You guys are jealous of other boys who get to hang out with the girls. Well my advice, do something cool, make yourself attractive. And stop being senti about lovers hanging out in the library you NERD!! An IITian is never sentimental about library ethics, cmon GET A LIFE!!
Reg. condition of rooms, common room, grounds, labs, cafeteria, ill soon post pics and you can all judge for yourselves. I have already admitted they cant be compared to private colleges but are same as old iits such as bombay, kharagpur etc.

  33. @mr avinash
you know whats funny. whats funny is that you don't know that i can edit this post's contents anytime. so if something is written here, its not necessary that it was written when i first wrote this article. it might have been written a couple of minutes ago! i wrote the next two months line in april after the bill was passed by lok sabha on 23rd march. so cut the crap about your 6 year theory.

as far as the point you're trying to raise about conversion to IIT is concerned, I have mentioned the links, they're official. Guys check them out and judge for yourselves. I neednt spoon feed you. You have the internet, search out the situtation yourself as I did before joining this insti.

To save your time here is the summary on that:
A bill needs to be passed by both Lok sabha and Rajya sabha in order to become an act. The bill to convert IT into IIT was passed by lok sabha on 23rd march 2011. It was tabled in the Rajya Sabha for passing on 24th march 2011. It is scheduled to be passed by Rajya Sabha in the monsoon session of the parliament which starts from the second week of July.

Now somebody said the faculty wont change after IIT conversion. True! But how is the faculty related to the tag of being an IITian. Noone asks you the name of your teachers after you mention that you are an IITian.

One anonymous said be wise and dont lose the tag of iitian otherwise you'll keep regretting it. Well, my advice is that even if your join IIT BHU or any other IIT, dont totally depend on your IIT tag for a successful carrier. If you waste 4 years at IIT doing nothing and then expect that you are certain to reach the top just because you have the IIT tag then stop dreaming. More than 5000 people pass out as IITians every year, so your IIT tag is not that special. You need to develop your skills in order to be more successful than others. Don't do that and you'll surely regret it!

  34. Why this discussion is going on?
This discussion is on because of people who plant false stories in the market. This discussion is on because with the coming up on new IITs, students are confused between joining ITBHU or new IITs. This discussion is on because I wanted to start a discussion. You are welcome to post your comments on the content but dont ask about the purpose of this discussion! If you dont see its purpose, then you probably shouldnt be here, get lost, this post is not for you! dont misguide the fucchas!

or mail your queries to me on my email id anand.prakash.eee09@itbhu.ac.in

If you have talents others than mugging, being a nerd and if you're not sentimental about lovers hanging out in the library then please do join our insti. If you like girls, you're confident about your personality and you're not jealous of your friends hanging out with girls then please join our insti. If you are interested in overall personality development then please do join our insti. You are the people who Im trying to attract to our college through this article. You are the people who will have the time of your life in your 4/5 years here. If you do not fit any of the categories Ive mentioned above then please stay away and go to IIT Patna, Jodhpur etc because you'll get depressed about your lack of talent in ITBHU.

The anonymous cynics, keep posting your comments, love to reply you back, another reason why i wrote this article :p

  36. One more thing, Anand Bhaiya,
More teachers are due to be recruited at the institute. The process of recruitment was postponed beacause process of recruitment by a university is different from IIT.Plus the IIT tag will offer more incentives and and will be more attractive. One of the profs. had told me this.

And with a personal experience what will you recommend me IITG ece and IT-BHU cse because I want good resources-faculties and good curriculum. thanx a lot! :)

  41. check out the course content of these two courses on the websites of the respective institutes. if cse interests you more then come to it bhu, if ece interests you more go to iit guwahati. my prediction is that this year these two courses will have very similar opening closing ranks.
cse placements are the best among all branches in itbhu ie the average package of cse is highest among all branches.
i am giving you an email id: kumar.ankit.cse09@itbhu.ac.in
you can email your specific queries here. this guy will know better about the exact value of average package, highest package etc.

but i would like to point out one thing that the bill concerning conversion of of ITBHU to IIT BHU and the one concerning the inclusion of new IITs into the IIT system are not separate but they are one and the same bill.So the day Insitute of Technology amandment is passed by RS and signed by the president (Which is by the way expected to be done in monsoon session of the parliament),the new IITs and IIT BHU will get their legal existence.

  51. I came to IIT-BHU on 27th July and i was a bit sad for having not taken the so-called-great Mumbai Meta or Delhi EP but today after 2 months at IIT-Varanasi, I m very very very very happy. I dont regret at all why i took cse bhu even though i had a rank 1789. I belong to varanasi itself and i had always desired to be in a big city but still i feel one of the best decisions of my lyf was choosing IIT-BHU CSE. anonymous bull shit who is posting nonsense of IIT Varanasi must realize that tomorrow he would be dreaming his son to be in IIT-BHU.

IIT-BHU has a long way to go. The avg package this year has been nearby 12lpa with highest being 45lpa.where does iit bhu lag behind cse roorkee??

In fact i feel that 600 onwards the best choice is cse iit bhu. mumbai cs is better than varanasi cse but mumbai meta is far below iit bhu cse.

I too cried and was very sad on getting iit varanasi but today after 2 months at iit varanasi i love my bhu and i am damn sure my batchmate nishank, who posted above, would definitely agree.

I feel if cse is not available at mumbai/kanpur/delhi/kharagpur/madras go for iit bhu cse watsoever ur rank is...
